Lisa Scottoline, known for her suspenseful, character driven novels, brings us an emotionally gripping tale that examines the father-son relationship and a split second decision that changes the lives of an entire family in her newest book entitled, “Keep Quiet.” A simple trip to pick up his sixteen year old son, Ryan, turns into a nightmare for the pair of them when Jake allows Ryan to drive home from the movie theater and take a deserted road home as a detour. When tragedy strikes, Jake makes a split decision, and both father and son are then forced into a web of lies, secrets and deceit, which threatens to tear the entire family apart, ruining them all in this very powerful and dramatic tale, making us all ask ourselves how far a parent should go to protect their children.
When an extra set of antique cookie cutters appears in Olivia Grayson’s quaint shop, “The Gingerbread House,” a murder soon follows, leading Olivia and her sidekick and best friend, Maddie, on a roller coaster ride of adventure to catch the killer in “Cookies and Scream” book number 5 in The Cookie Cutter Shop Mystery series by Virginia Lowell.
Suburban wife and mother of two, Clare Taylor, has just spent a wild week in Chicago, returning home to her mediocre life in Madison, Wisconsin on the night before Halloween. Stepping into her mortgage-free home, Clare is astounded to discover that her suburban life has hit a huge roadblock; her furniture is gone, her husband and two children are gone, and the nightmare continues when the body of her husband’s childhood friend is discovered in the backyard and the house goes into foreclosure the very next day. To discover how things could have gone so terribly wrong, Clare must step back in time to a Halloween 35 years before; the Halloween of 1976 when the nightmare really began in “All the Things You Are” by Declan Hughes.
The setting is the idyllic ski town of Breckenridge, Colorado, where, three months before, Sarah St. John tragically lost her twenty two year old son, Cully, in an avalanche. She can scarcely believe or accept the fact that she’ll never hear the ‘swoosh’ of his ski pants, watch him skateboard or hear the sound of his voice again. Going through all of the stages of grief will take a million years for Sarah. Those around her; her family and friends, are all doing their best to take her sadness away, but there is no comfort for her. When a strange girl appears on Sarah’s doorstep, she brings along with her a secret; a secret concerning Cully that will change them all forever in “The Possibilities” by Kaui Hart Nemmings.
