May is here and that means time to finish school and get ready for SUMMER! What plans are you and your family making this year? Don't forget about Summer Reading at the Library! Signups for most programs start this month.

Celebrate children in May, along with National Children's Book Week, May 12-18 (May 4-10 at DeMotte and Wheatfield). Special events going on at all library locations! Vote online now for your favorite book before May 12!

May is National Bike Month and National Physical Fitness and Sports Month. Get outside and enjoy some fresh air and sunshine! Parents:

Be Kind to Animals Week is May 4-10.

May 1 is May Day. On May Day, Hawaiians celebrate Lei Day. Learn about the 'Aloha spirit.'

May 1 is Mother Goose Day. Read a mother goose book!

May 6 is National Teacher Day. "The best teachers teach from the heart, not from the book." — Author Unknown. Visit the virtual mural at the National Education Association and Thank a Teacher, or write a thank you note to your favorite teacher.

May 5 is Children's Day in Japan. Read a book about Japan!

May 9 It's Eleanor Estes' birthday. Read Ginger Pye.

May 12 is Limerick Day. Visit Barbara J. Feldman's limerick's website for links to good kids' sites on limericks and writing them.

May 11 is Mother's Day -- Did you know Mother's Day was recognized as a holiday in the United States 100 years ago? Read about the history of Mother's Day and get some ideas for how to surprise your mom at Hallmark.com. Read My mother is so smart by Tomie dePaola. Do something nice for your mom!

May 15 It's L. Frank Baum's birthday. Have you read The Wizard of Oz? Did you know there are 14 books in the original Oz series, and all of these are in the public domain and can be found online?

May 22 It's Sir Arthur Conan Doyle's birthday. Read a mystery to celebrate the creator of the greatest detective ever: Sherlock Holmes!

May 23 It's Margaret Wise Brown's birthday. Read or re-read Goodnight Moon!

May 24 The Brooklyn Bridge opened on this day in 1882.

May 26 is Memorial Day, a day to honor American soldiers fallen in battle. Try your hand at these puzzles, or color a flag to hang in your window. Read more about Memorial Day.

May 28 John Muir founded the Sierra Club on this day in 1892. What wild places have you visited, or do you want to visit? Check out some books about national and state parks at the library!

May 29 Mount Everest Summited! On this day in 1953, Sir Edmund Hillary and Tenzing Norgay were the first team to reach the top of this legendary mountain.
