It's April, and as the area warms back up, there are plenty of things to do. Are you ready to celebrate spring?

It's Math Awareness Month. Why didn't the two 4's want any dinner? Because they already 8! Discover something amazing about math today at the library.

It's National Poetry Month. Learn to write poetry with childrens' authors Jean Marzollo, Jack Prelutsky and Karla Kuskin at Scholastic.com or check out the interactive Poetry Idea Engine and create your own works of art.

April is Prevention of Animal Cruelty Month. Visit the American Society for Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (ASPCA) and  learn about its "Go Orange" campaign

National Library Week is April 12-18. The theme this year is Unlimited possibilities @ your library. Stop in and tell us why libraries are important to you! Special events are happening at all library locations!

Word of the month: palindrome - A word, phrase or verse that reads the same forward or backward. Example: "Step on no pets."

April 1 is April Fools' Day. Here are some pranks for parents to play on you.

April 2 is Hans Christian Andersen's Birthday. Read a Fairy Tale to celebrate!

April 3 is the birthday of primatologist Jane Goodall. A primatologist is someone who studies monkeys, chimpanzees and gorillas. Visit her website, the Jane Goodall Institute, to learn about her latest projects around the world.

April 5  Today is  Easter Sunday.

April 12 Beverly Cleary, author of Beezus and Ramona and The Mouse and The Motorcycle, and many other children's books, was born this day.

Apr. 17 Visit the DeMotte Library from 5-7pm for the Spring Festival, an annual event that includes games for kids, Bingo, prizes, popcorn, a cake walk, and Nintendo Wii, Library Miniature Golf, a photo booth, as well as the Friends of the Library Book Sale and booth. This free event is a fun way to spend an early spring evening.

Visit the library's booth at the annual Earth Day program on Saturday, April 18  from 9am-12pm at Brookside Park in Rensselaer. Visit NASA's Climate Kids website and learn about climate change and sustainability.

April 21 is the birthday of  author Barbara Park. What's your favorite Junie B. Jones book?

April 23 is Take our Daughters and Sons to Work Day. If you don't already know, find out what your mom and dad do for a living.

Celebrate Arbor Day on April 24 with a visit to the What Tree is That website and learn about your favorite trees! Read The Giving Tree by Shel Silverstein.

April 28 is author Amy Hest's birthday. Visit her website for tips for young writers, and a guide to her book, Remembering Mrs. Rossi.
