When July is hot and muggy, there’s no better time to celebrate National Ice Cream Month. In 1984, thanks to President Ronald Reagan, July was declared to be National Ice Cream Month. He also proclaimed the third Sunday in July as National Ice Cream Day. So there’s a great reason to indulge in a cool sweet treat.

President Reagan stated that “Ice cream is a fun and nutritious food that is enjoyed by over 90% of Americans.”

Since the main ingredient of milk is filled with vitamins and minerals, you can feel satisfied that you’re treating yourself to a healthy snack when you indulge in a scoop or two of ice cream. Visit your local ice cream shop or make it for yourself with recipes from books at the library. Sweet cream & sugar cones : 90 recipes for making your own ice cream and frozen treats from Bi-Rite Creamery by Anne Walker is just one such book.

So treat yourself on July 16th or throughout the month to a milkshake, cone or sundae. After all, it’s a national celebration and an American tradition everyone can enjoy!
