When July is hot and muggy, there’s no better time to celebrate National Ice Cream Month [1]. In 1984, thanks to President Ronald Reagan, July was declared to be National Ice Cream Month. He also proclaimed the third Sunday in July as National Ice Cream Day. So there’s a great reason to indulge in a cool sweet treat.
President Reagan stated that “Ice cream is a fun and nutritious food that is enjoyed by over 90% of Americans.”
Since the main ingredient of milk is filled with vitamins and minerals, you can feel satisfied that you’re treating yourself to a healthy snack when you indulge in a scoop or two of ice cream. Visit your local ice cream shop or make it for yourself with recipes from books [2] at the library. Sweet cream & sugar cones : 90 recipes for making your own ice cream and frozen treats from Bi-Rite Creamery [3] by Anne Walker is just one such book.
So treat yourself on July 16th or throughout the month to a milkshake, cone or sundae. After all, it’s a national celebration and an American tradition everyone can enjoy!
