Do Eskimos really have 100 words for snow?

Printer-friendlyPrinter-friendly

No. That's an exaggeration, also known as stretching the truth a little.

The different languages spoken by the indigenous peoples of Alaska and Canada might have anywhere from 2 to about 15 different words for snow.

English has many different snow words as well, such as: slush, sleet, hoar, floe, icicle, powder, rime, avalanche and blizzard (just to name a few). Here is an article from a linguistics professor at Princeton University counting the 15 "lexemes" for snow that he found in the Alaskan Yupik language.
