Gutenberg.org / Librivox

These sites are devoted to providing copies of public domain literature  - more than 70,000 titles - for free public use. Download ebooks from Gutenberg.org, or read them in your web browser, or visit Librivox to stream or download audio files provided by volunteer readers.

Many of the books on these sites are available on paid sites as well, but these sites require no fees and no special apps. They also provide an interesting way to not only discover the classics, but also to help bring some of the hidden books of the ages to light.
