May in Indiana means flowers, spring, and of course, the Indy 500.

This year, the City of Rensselaer is competing with several other communities in Indiana for a chance to be chosen by the Indianapolis Motor Speedway's 2012 "Back Home Again in Indiana" Community Outreach Program to receive a $20,000 grant.

The city, in partnership with Main Street Rensselaer, want to use the funds to create new entry way signs at the four entrances to the City. Not only are the signs an upgrade for the community, but would replace a sign destroyed last year by the high winds that cut through south of town, uprooting several trees at Saint Joseph's College.

According to the Back Home Again in Rensselaer Facebook Page, "The signs would help to create a humble brand for our community and create a cohesive connection to the downtown and the revitalization efforts underway.

"On the sign, it reads, ‘Back Home Again in…Rensselaer', whether you are a lifelong resident, a new member to our community, or just passing through, know that you can always call Rensselaer your home, and we welcome you to come back again and again."

Rensselaer also has a special tie to the theme. The song "Back Home Again in Indiana" was composed by Rensselaer's  native son, James F. Hanley in 1917. 

The James F. Hanley Park, a "pocket park" located at the corner of Washington and Front Streets in Rensselaer, was dedicated to honor the location of his birthplace. The historic site includes a State historic marker flanked by brick columns, with limestone caps and iron fence and bench.

On May 2nd, Rensselaer Mayor Stephan A. Wood proclaimed May as a time for our community to celebrate the Indianapolis 500 and our links to "The Greatest Spectacle in Racing."

Between now and the race, May 27, 2012, you are invited to share your Indy Motor Speedway memories -- favorite races, favorite drivers, Snake Pit, Gasoline Alley, souvenirs -- at the Back Home Again in Rensselaer Facebook Page. Also spread the word about your favorite Jasper County City (we have lots of favorite Jasper County Towns and communities too!).

And join Mayor Wood, and the numerous community groups who are going all out for this contest, and celebrate the month of May as we anticipate "The Greatest Spectacle in Racing."
