If you're a farmer, be proud and show it

If you haven't heard about the farming video taking the country by storm this week, now is your chance to watch "I'm Farming and I Grow It," the viral parody of LMFAO's annoyingly catchy dance hit "I'm Sexy and I Know It."

The weekend after the Fourth of July, CBS News ran a report about the video, drawing even more attention to the Facebook phenomenon. Part of it's charm, aside from having something else to hum while the earworm tune goes through your head, is the message of the fun spoof -- one most Jasper County residents already know --  that farmers feed the nation.

Given the drought and strange growing season that has already beset local farmers, as we get ready for next week's Jasper County Fair, this is a timely message indeed.

On a related note, the Farmers Market in downtown Rensselaer has now started Tuesday evening hours on the Courthouse Lawn from 4-6 p.m. in July and August. Music and special events will be held most nights, with Kids Night on July 24, a Pet Parade Aug. 14, the Retail Merchants Rocker Auction on Aug. 21 and the RCHS Band performing Aug. 28.

The market is also open every Saturday through October 7:30-11:30 a.m.
