Olympic games fan local torch memories

Printer-friendlyPrinter-friendly

In 1996, the torch relay for the Atlanta Olympic Games brought the symbol into communities all over the country, From San Fransisco, Calif., to Jersey City, NJ, that would normally not have been on the route for the international event.

Three of those communities, DeMotte, Rensselaer and Remington, are in Jasper County, and the day is fondly remembered by those who were around to witness the relay.

You can now see photos from the event, and the Rensselaer Republican's coverage, on the library's Local History News Files page.

Whether you are reliving old memories or looking for the first time, this bit of community pride is a neat way to accent the 2012 Olympics, which will kick off this Friday, July 27, at 3p.m. CST in London's Olympic Stadium.
