New book to tell story of Fairchild family

This spring the Fairchild House in DeMotte will turn 90, and there will be a new book to tell the story of the family behind one of Jasper County's enduring landmarks.

Indiana Author W.C. Madden to visit Rensselaer Library

Madden is proud to announce his newest, and very first fiction title, Tecumseh’s Curse.

JC Historical Society celebrates 100 years of Girl Scouts

Whether you're a boy or a girl, scouting can be an important part of growing up in America. As of today, these programs are now both 100 years old or older.

On March 12, 1912, Juliette "Daisy" Gordon Low held the first Girl Scout meeting in Savannah, Ga. Now, more than 3.2 million girls and adults are members of the organization.

Organize Kids' Cards

We wanted to take a moment to share the clever solution a parent came up with for organizing her daughters' library cards. Using little named toggles that can be found at many stores, she gave each daughter her own personalized card.

Paws to Read coming to DeMotte Library

DeMotte Library Offers “Paws to Read” Program for Elementary School Age Children

The DeMotte Public Library has gone to the Dogs! Reading assistance dogs that is. The library is pleased to announce the Paws to Read program. The program allows elementary readers the opportunity to practice their reading skills by reading to a dog.

Local author explores southern view of Civil War

Rensselaer author Rich Busse's first novel, In the Beauty of the Lilies, is his tribute to his life-long passion about the Civil War.

The novel is written from the perspective of a fictional war correspondent named Royal Chapman, in honor of Busse's teacher. Presented in an informal mix of poetry, collected thoughts and complete journal entries, the book does not need to be read in order to be understood, he said.

Jim Gill Family Concert

Music lovers will find themselves clapping, singing, dancing, jumping and sneezing along with the folk music of family entertainer, Jim Gill, as he strums his energetic, rhythmic tunes on the banjo at the DeMotte Library during his “Family Room Tour” musical performance, slated to be held in the library’s meeting rooms on Monday, February 13 at 7 pm.

If you are looking for native Indiana plants, or Indiana history, there are two new resources you can check out online.

The nationally-recognized Indiana State Digital Archives has new digital collections available for anyone interested in Indiana heritage and genealogy. The Digital Archives enables Hoosiers and researchers worldwide to view the vast collection of historical and vital records housed at the State Archives.
