What are the Ides of March?

You might have heard this strange phrase before, especially if it has to do with bad luck or something spooky, but what does it mean?

It dates back to the time of the Roman Empire, and to the emperor Julius Caesar.

And the award goes to...

Organize Kids' Cards

We wanted to take a moment to share the clever solution a parent came up with for organizing her daughters' library cards. Using little named toggles that can be found at many stores, she gave each daughter her own personalized card.

Paws to Read coming to DeMotte Library

DeMotte Library Offers “Paws to Read” Program for Elementary School Age Children

The DeMotte Public Library has gone to the Dogs! Reading assistance dogs that is. The library is pleased to announce the Paws to Read program. The program allows elementary readers the opportunity to practice their reading skills by reading to a dog.

Local author explores southern view of Civil War

Rensselaer author Rich Busse's first novel, In the Beauty of the Lilies, is his tribute to his life-long passion about the Civil War.

The novel is written from the perspective of a fictional war correspondent named Royal Chapman, in honor of Busse's teacher. Presented in an informal mix of poetry, collected thoughts and complete journal entries, the book does not need to be read in order to be understood, he said.

Jim Gill Family Concert

Music lovers will find themselves clapping, singing, dancing, jumping and sneezing along with the folk music of family entertainer, Jim Gill, as he strums his energetic, rhythmic tunes on the banjo at the DeMotte Library during his “Family Room Tour” musical performance, slated to be held in the library’s meeting rooms on Monday, February 13 at 7 pm.

Like a Bargain? Then You'll Love The New Fiction at JCPL!

Sitting by my front door are a pair of flip flops; the ones I wore all summer long and just never had the heart to put away for the winter. It's January, I know; boots should take the place of those flip flops, but I still can't make myself put those pretty, beaded symbols of summer away. Besides they were a bargain.
